David Bellamy's Brighton Christmas 'Tree Appeal'

Tree Appeal & Professor David Bellamy

Botanist Professor David Bellamy will be giving away five hundred native broad-leaved trees to be planted in family gardens across Brighton.

The festive tree planting marks the final event of the Big Nature partnership designed to celebrate 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB).

Dr Dan Danahar, coordinator of Brighton & Hove's "Big Nature" said, "This is a wonderful way to end the IYB celebrations in Brighton & Hove, as it enables residents to make a lasting contribution to raise our shared local biodiversity."

The local company "Family Investments" is sponsoring the trees and over the past few years they have planted over seven thousand trees through environmental organisation Tree Appeal.

With the planting of native trees in family gardens all over the city, Brighton & Hove will raise its biodiversity in a single sweep.

Professor Bellamy said, "Trees are not just for Christmas and I would like to share the enduring benefits of planting native trees with the public. Planting trees in gardens encourages wildlife, which increases biodiversity – creating a greener world and a better life for all."

Trees will be supplied on a first come, first served basis and will be available for collection on Wednesday 15th December at the Pavilion Gardens, where Professor Bellamy will give a short talk on the importance of biodiversity. In addition, everyone who applies for a tree can enter into a prize draw, with five lucky winners receiving a personal visit from Professor Bellamy, who will help to plant their tree.

Residents interested in adopting a free sapling for their garden can register their application through Tree Appeal’s website www.treeappeal.com/Brighton_Christmas.asp
